Humans and sharks have a long history of interaction, but in the modern world, how do we live side-by-side with sensible and sustainable relations? Dr Vic Peddemors has grappled with this topic for many years and will be presenting results of two recent projects investigating shark/human interaction.
6.30pm: Behaviour of grey nurse sharks towards recreational baits and lures
The potential danger that humans pose to sharks is epitomised by our interactions with grey nurse sharks which are listed as a threatened species on the east coast of Australia. Vic will present the research findings of a study, supported by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, investigating how grey nurse sharks interact with recreational fishing gear.
7:30pm: Bull shark distribution and movements in New South Wales
Bull sharks are one of the three shark species potentially dangerous to humans. Following a shark attack in Sydney Harbour in 2009, a research project was initiated to investigate bull shark movements within this waterway and beyond. Hear Vic present some surprising results of the tagging and tracking of bull sharks along the NSW coast.
